Title: A Mind Restored: Finding Freedom from the Shame & Stigma of Mental Illness

Author: Kimberly Muka Powers

Year: 2024

Category: Personal Stories, Self-Help

Premise: Kim is only 16 years old when Bipolar Disorder Type 1 (with psychotic features) hits her and pulls her from school. Kim takes the reader through her journey, hospital stays and faith as she works to recover. Kim faces multiple challenges with her schooling and eventually succeeds to become a licensed counsellor.

Review: I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book, knowing there was a significant portion of the book dedicated to Kim's faith. I was pleasantly surprised. There were no pushy, in-your-face directions that I must embrace God. In fact, her love of God an how her faith in Him has supported her has left me wishing I had such a relationship (and I'm agnostic!) Kim's journey mimics my own in many ways. It was helpful to read the experience of another young woman who has experienced bipolar type 1 with psychosis as well. The book is well-written, well-organized, and truly moving to read. I find Kim's self-help lessons are very in line with my own practices and are well laid out to help others. The book is divided into 6 parts covering her story and what has helped her, as well as how these techniques can help the reader as well.

Recommendation: I highly recommend this book for anyone experiencing a mood disorder, whether or not you are spiritual. The self-help concepts are bang-on and clearly laid out. It will be a valuable resource for anyone who is experiencing, or has a loved one experiencing, a mental illness like a mood disorder and is looking for ways to help/help themselves.
